South Orange County's Hard Water Is Quietly Wrecking Your Appliances

The Repair You Didn’t Cause

I’ve told this to a lot of customers who feel like they’re doing something wrong: it’s not you. If your dishwasher’s spray arms clog every year, your washer’s fill valve trickles instead of fills, or your fridge’s ice maker jams up every summer, the common thread isn’t a bad appliance or bad habits — it’s what’s coming out of your tap.

South Orange County sits at the tail end of the Colorado River Aqueduct system, and that water arrives loaded with dissolved calcium and magnesium. Depending on which part of Mission Viejo you’re in and how the local supply is blended that month, test results commonly land in the 15-20+ grains per gallon range — solidly in “very hard” territory. For comparison, water under 3 grains per gallon is considered soft. We’re nowhere close to that. And every time that water gets heated inside an appliance, the minerals fall out of solution and turn into scale — the chalky white deposit you’ve probably scraped off a shower head or a coffee maker.

The difference is that a coffee maker is a $30 appliance you replace without thinking about it. A dishwasher’s heating element or a washer’s water valve is not.

What Scale Actually Does Inside Each Appliance

Dishwashers — the worst-hit appliance in the house

Every cycle runs hot water across a heating element and forces it through narrow spray arm jets. Both are scale magnets. Over a few years, the jets narrow, water pressure drops, and dishes come out with that cloudy film that people assume is a detergent problem. It usually isn’t — it’s mineral deposit etched onto glassware and coating the tub walls. Left long enough, scale insulates the heating element so thoroughly that it burns out trying to reach temperature, and it can jam the wash pump’s impeller with flaking deposit.

What actually helps: run rinse aid every cycle, not just when you remember — it’s a scale-fighting product, not a shine product, in hard water areas. Run a citric-acid dishwasher cleaner monthly (not vinegar every load; too acidic, too often, and it degrades rubber seals over time). If your spray arm holes look chalky and undersized, soak the arm in warm vinegar for an hour before your next service call — sometimes that alone restores half the wash performance.

Washing machines — slow fills and dead valves

The inlet solenoid valve that lets water into the drum has a tiny mesh screen and a narrow orifice, both of which scale over almost as fast as a dishwasher jet. The early symptom is a wash cycle that takes longer than it used to because the machine is waiting on a slow fill. The late symptom is a valve that won’t open at all, throwing a “check water supply” fault even though your water is fine. On HE front-loaders, scale also builds inside the internal heating element on machines that have one, cutting efficiency the same way it does in a dishwasher.

What actually helps: a whole-house or point-of-use water softener is the real fix, not a washer-specific one. If a softener isn’t in the cards, expect inlet valve replacement roughly every 4-6 years instead of the 10+ years these parts last in soft-water regions — budget for it rather than being surprised by it.

Refrigerator ice makers — the quiet failure

This is the one homeowners never connect to water hardness. The ice maker’s water fill valve and the thin tube feeding it are exactly the kind of narrow, frequently-wetted passage scale loves. Ice production slows gradually — you don’t notice until the bin is half-empty and you assume the ice maker itself failed. Often it hasn’t; the fill line has narrowed to where only a trickle gets through per cycle. Cloudy or oddly-shaped cubes are another tell — trapped mineral content changes how the water freezes.

What actually helps: an inline refrigerator water filter does more than improve taste — a fresh filter (every 6 months, not “whenever the light comes on,” since those indicators track volume, not filter condition) also catches a meaningful amount of scale-forming mineral before it reaches the valve.

But if you’re on your third dishwasher heating element in eight years, the math on a softener starts looking a lot better than the math on another service call.

The Honest Middle Ground

Not everyone wants to install a softener, and that’s fine. If you’re not going to, the cheapest insurance is behavioral: rinse aid every load, a citric-acid cleaning cycle monthly, a fresh fridge water filter twice a year, and don’t ignore a dishwasher that’s suddenly leaving spots or a washer that fills slower than it used to. Those are early symptoms, not cosmetic annoyances, and catching a scaled valve before it seizes is a $150 part instead of a $400 one.
